ENDING SPOILERS

DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE STORY

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Anyway...

Overall, I liked the PoF storyline. It's still GW2, not going to win any awards for the writing, but they did a better job with the pacing and less contrivances than HoT. It would have been nice if it wasn't over quite so quickly, though.

It was nice having a proper epilogue, felt like a good way to wind things down. BUT then... the cliffhanger... Kralkatorrik flying across Elona, turning everything underneath into Brand, and the heroes about ready to soil their undies.

Personally, I think they should have cut it about one minute sooner. It's the same problem when LS2 ended - it could have left off with the Pact fleet flying into the distance, but it ends with the fleet's destruction and events clearly will pick up immediately after in the game, but in real life weeks or months will pass. This puts us RPers in a bind because now we have to figure out how to justify the time in between.

ANet needs to stop doing that. They could easily have left things vague, cut things off when the heroes hear Kralk roar in the distance. It would have been the perfect time to end, leaving us with a sense of dread, but not knowing what to expect. Obviously, Kralk is rising, we just wouldn't know when. Maybe he let off a burp after his divine meal, whatever. Either way, it would have allowed time in game to pass while people get ready, and nervous.

Then they could have used those last seconds as the prologue to LS4. Kralk has had time to digest his lunch and is finally moving. Of course, realistically, it took more than a few days to travel across deserts and Elona to stop Balthazar, but even that time runs out. Instead, we'll have to justify why most of the maps we just explored are NOT Branded. ANet clearly learned a lot from the criticisms of HoT, and PoF has been superior in just about every way, but but unless LS4 is starting up really soon this a problem being repeated.

If Anet is to be believed, LWS4 is going to start up in the next few months. I speculate January, but we could see it sooner for all we know. They have figured out some kind of momentum now with one team (Which is split into three groups) working on the living world and another team working on expansions, so hopefully the new season should start soon-ish.

The most straightforward solution, as in most cases of cliffhangers, would be to assume that the ending only takes place when the next story patch is released, and until then the story is still at an earlier stage in which the final battle hasn't taken place yet.

The alternative, advancing the world's state from pre PoF straight to post PoF without a window of time for PoF itself to take place, is just as problematic.

Personally I'm fine with cliffhangers like this when the game gives us earlier parts of the story we can rp around while waiting for a resolution, and when the resolution itself isn't too far away. The Pact Fleet was a great deal more problematic, since it was in limbo for a lot longer, and the rest of the release that came with it was rather bare of story that could be said to be taking place during the wait for HoT.

Personally always RP'd it similar to Zagzag mentioned.

Now my characters would be in the universe of The Commander arriving in Elona. The Balthazar arc would just be beginning and that cliffhanger begins when the next season starts.
