(TW: Death, blood, war... dat sorta ting)
The Taste of Blood
The thunderous sound of cannon fire roared across the battlefield. Dust, dirt and grime splattering the plains as Reyes grunted amidst a large crater. Her squad pinned down on two sides. Separatists and Renegades warring with one another. Which left the small group of Vigil Warriors caught in the crossfire.
"S-sir! We gotta get out of here.." Cat stated, her eyes wide as the sound of flying mortar filled her ears. All the while a plume of smoke exploded near the crest of the crater.
"Not now Private Reyes, we've got a job to do, and I ain't about to go back to the Keep and say we didn't do our job." The Sergeant growled, he was a large golden furred Charr. The Sergeant brought his shield around, smashing the flat side of his sword against it. "Vigil! Fight! Let's show them our hearts!" He roared above the exploding munitions. "And then show them theirs!"
A cry rang out amidst the Vigil platoon. Warriors leaping over the crest of the crater, extracting themselves from their cover. Despite the Sergeant's rallying cries, it wouldn't be enough. Bullets began to shred into the platoon, many who vaulted over, cut down before they could advance. Gunfire rang amidst the chaos, the constant pounding of mortar shells accompanying it.
"Get down! Get down I said!" The Sergeant snarled. The Charr glanced among those still alive, only a small handful. Four in total, two were brand new. The Sergeant grumbled and sighed deeply. "We gotta go Vigil.." He glowered. "We will make a run for it down the road, I will put up a barrier to cover our retreat. But we gotta move quick."
The frightened faces of his platoon all seemed to nod in unison. Reyes pursed her lips together and attempted to swallow the knot forming in her throat. "Y-Yes... S-sir." She said, her entire body shook, the throbbing of the constant mortar fire pounding in her skull. She crouched low, as did the rest of the Squad.
"Go! Now!" The Sergeant said leaping out of the pit, the rest of the troops followed. They held their shields high blocking arrows and a few stray bullets that went their way. Smoke and dust filled their lungs as the retreated.
Cat's thighs burnt and throbbed as she ran. She ran, and ran, panting by the time she thought the mortars stopped. She looked on either side of her, realizing they were still in the midst of it all. Renegades and Separatists exchanging fire. One of the Vigil troopers stepped on a mine, the Norn's leg ripped off. The woman's lower half torn to shreds as if by some feral beast.
"Go! Keep going! Don't stop!" The Sergeant said, knowing the Norn's fate. As the Sergeant said this, the Sylvari Elementalist caught a bullet in his throat. The horrific sound of his sap gurgling and spilling from his mouth while he clutched his throat. The Sylvari dropped face first into the mud, his body going limp while his leg twitched on its own.
Catalyna's heart raced, it pounded in tempo with the mortar fire. She didn't know where her weapons were. Nor did she care at this point. Her mind raced, the edge of her sight began to cloud. She felt her entire body shudder. An arrow then whizzed by her shoulder, lodging itself into the other Private's chest. A human, like her. The protrusion sticking out of his abdomen, then another.. and another, his body peppered with arrows as it slumped to the ground, twisted into an odd shape.
"Kid, we are almost out.." The Sergeant said, chuffing as he ran alongside Reyes. A renegade landed directly in front of the two. He held a small Asura Vigil sharpshooter in his clawed hand. His entire paw holding the poor woman's head as he shook her violently. A loud snap of the Asura's neck and the Vigil member was gone, chucked away like a useless broken toy.
"You're next." The Renegade said, pointing the tip of his jagged sword at the pair. The Sergeant frowned, his heavy brow furrowed as he revved into action. The Sergeant and Renegade locked blades. Both Charr were angry, ferocious and massive in their own right.
Each of the Charr's blades clashed and hammered at one another, the fight was brutal. The Sergeant headbutt the Renegade causing him to shake his body to rid the daze. "ENOUGH!" The Renegade growled, drawing a pistol. The Sergeant out of arm's length. He pointed it at the Charr. "You are a traitor. You will die a traitors death!" The Renegade roared firing three times into the Sergeant's gut.
The Sergeant grunted as the bullets struck true. He felt the warm rush of his blood as it bubbled out of the fresh wound. A paw went to his abdomen feeling the life essence begin to seep from his chest and stomach. His breathing grew labored, his broad chest rose and fell in jagged curt movements. He mustered what strength remained before he pounced atop the Renegade. The Sergeant's claws dug into the Renegade which caught him off guard. The Renegade howled in pain as the two exchanged blows again.
The Sergeant was still atop him, shredding into the soft leather armor with his massive claws. The Sergeant had finally overpowered the other Charr. His jaw opened and clamped down firmly onto the Renegade's windpipe. The tearing of meat and tissue filled the battlefield air as the Sergeant ripped it out with his jaw. The Sergeant hunched over and panting with labored breath above his foe.
Cat frowned and looked around, realizing she was the last one left. She watched as the Sergeant's body slumped over, his breathing grew weaker and weaker. She raced over, her small hands slipped under his massive arms as she attempted to drag him back. Pulling his body through the mud and muck, as she tried to reach the closest settlement.
