The Taste of Blood

The thunderous sound of cannon fire roared across the battlefield. Dust, dirt and grime splattering the plains as Reyes grunted amidst a large crater. Her squad pinned down on two sides. Separatists and Renegades warring with one another. Which left the small group of Vigil Warriors caught in the crossfire.

"S-sir! We gotta get out of here.." Cat stated, her eyes wide as the sound of flying mortar filled her ears. All the while a plume of smoke exploded near the crest of the crater.

"Not now Private Reyes, we've got a job to do, and I ain't about to go back to the Keep and say we didn't do our job." The Sergeant growled, he was a large golden furred Charr. The Sergeant brought his shield around, smashing the flat side of his sword against it. "Vigil! Fight! Let's show them our hearts!" He roared above the exploding munitions. "And then show them theirs!"

A cry rang out amidst the Vigil platoon. Warriors leaping over the crest of the crater, extracting themselves from their cover. Despite the Sergeant's rallying cries, it wouldn't be enough. Bullets began to shred into the platoon, many who vaulted over, cut down before they could advance. Gunfire rang amidst the chaos, the constant pounding of mortar shells accompanying it.

"Get down! Get down I said!" The Sergeant snarled. The Charr glanced among those still alive, only a small handful. Four in total, two were brand new. The Sergeant grumbled and sighed deeply. "We gotta go Vigil.." He glowered. "We will make a run for it down the road, I will put up a barrier to cover our retreat. But we gotta move quick."

The frightened faces of his platoon all seemed to nod in unison. Reyes pursed her lips together and attempted to swallow the knot forming in her throat. "Y-Yes... S-sir." She said, her entire body shook, the throbbing of the constant mortar fire pounding in her skull. She crouched low, as did the rest of the Squad.

"Go! Now!" The Sergeant said leaping out of the pit, the rest of the troops followed. They held their shields high blocking arrows and a few stray bullets that went their way. Smoke and dust filled their lungs as the retreated.

Cat's thighs burnt and throbbed as she ran. She ran, and ran, panting by the time she thought the mortars stopped. She looked on either side of her, realizing they were still in the midst of it all. Renegades and Separatists exchanging fire. One of the Vigil troopers stepped on a mine, the Norn's leg ripped off. The woman's lower half torn to shreds as if by some feral beast.

"Go! Keep going! Don't stop!" The Sergeant said, knowing the Norn's fate. As the Sergeant said this, the Sylvari Elementalist caught a bullet in his throat. The horrific sound of his sap gurgling and spilling from his mouth while he clutched his throat. The Sylvari dropped face first into the mud, his body going limp while his leg twitched on its own.

Catalyna's heart raced, it pounded in tempo with the mortar fire. She didn't know where her weapons were. Nor did she care at this point. Her mind raced, the edge of her sight began to cloud. She felt her entire body shudder. An arrow then whizzed by her shoulder, lodging itself into the other Private's chest. A human, like her. The protrusion sticking out of his abdomen, then another.. and another, his body peppered with arrows as it slumped to the ground, twisted into an odd shape.

"Kid, we are almost out.." The Sergeant said, chuffing as he ran alongside Reyes. A renegade landed directly in front of the two. He held a small Asura Vigil sharpshooter in his clawed hand. His entire paw holding the poor woman's head as he shook her violently. A loud snap of the Asura's neck and the Vigil member was gone, chucked away like a useless broken toy.

"You're next." The Renegade said, pointing the tip of his jagged sword at the pair. The Sergeant frowned, his heavy brow furrowed as he revved into action. The Sergeant and Renegade locked blades. Both Charr were angry, ferocious and massive in their own right.

Each of the Charr's blades clashed and hammered at one another, the fight was brutal. The Sergeant headbutt the Renegade causing him to shake his body to rid the daze. "ENOUGH!" The Renegade growled, drawing a pistol. The Sergeant out of arm's length. He pointed it at the Charr. "You are a traitor. You will die a traitors death!" The Renegade roared firing three times into the Sergeant's gut.

The Sergeant grunted as the bullets struck true. He felt the warm rush of his blood as it bubbled out of the fresh wound. A paw went to his abdomen feeling the life essence begin to seep from his chest and stomach. His breathing grew labored, his broad chest rose and fell in jagged curt movements. He mustered what strength remained before he pounced atop the Renegade. The Sergeant's claws dug into the Renegade which caught him off guard. The Renegade howled in pain as the two exchanged blows again.

The Sergeant was still atop him, shredding into the soft leather armor with his massive claws. The Sergeant had finally overpowered the other Charr. His jaw opened and clamped down firmly onto the Renegade's windpipe. The tearing of meat and tissue filled the battlefield air as the Sergeant ripped it out with his jaw. The Sergeant hunched over and panting with labored breath above his foe.

Cat frowned and looked around, realizing she was the last one left. She watched as the Sergeant's body slumped over, his breathing grew weaker and weaker. She raced over, her small hands slipped under his massive arms as she attempted to drag him back. Pulling his body through the mud and muck, as she tried to reach the closest settlement.

Shores of Orr

Spoiler: Music InspirationShow

Malachors Leap, the stench of rotting fish caused a foul miasma to linger across the Pyrite Peninsula. The sickly green waters washed lazily at the shore, while fog drifted in the horizon. The air was humid and sticky, nearly choking due to its density. Nothing grew in Orr. There was only death and decay due to the damage caused by Zhaitan. Dead, gray and broken bits of coral littered the beachfront while jagged sharp rocks jut out of the sand.

Corporal Catalyna Reyes stood just at the water's edge. Wet sand stuck to her metal greaves and boots, granules of sand slipping through the small gaps of her armor, irritating the bottom of her feet. She crinkled her nose, tasting the horrid smell that lingered at the back of her throat and atop her tongue. She wanted to gag but snuffed out the desire to do so. Her jaw clenched as she scanned the soon-to-be battlefield. The squad of eight Vigil soldiers began hunkering down. Placing barricades with whatever they could muster; broken shields, damaged crates, pinning and piling items into a moshpit of junk in a feeble attempt to add protection and hamper the coming horde of corrupted.

"Hurry up! Get more bodies over there, pair up!" The Norn instructed, he was Sergeant Bardi Battlesplitter, who was given direct control over this small group of soldiers. The squad quickly followed his command, pairing up and making a small defensive line against the shambling Zhaitan forces.

Most were Asura and Humans, a few large Charr lingered in the masses. They were limping and crawling their way down the sand toward the Vigil. Some even carried weapons; others have disintegrated beyond recognition, chunks of meat slipping off them as black, oily trails of blood oozed slowly down their misshapen bodies.

By the time the horde of Zhaitan minions arrived, it was dusk, the sky growing darker by the second as the two groups engaged one another. The sounds of tearing flesh, groans, moans, and shrieks of horror filled the beach. The Vigil was overwhelmed and outnumbered, despite their armor and their weaponry, they couldn't gain the advantage. Two of the Soldiers were killed; one pinned beneath four Zhaitan minions, ripped and torn to shreds. The other caught a crooked looking blade to the gut and was left thrashing in the sand by his murderer.

The squad closed ranks, their line morphing into a small protective circle. Six Vigil soldiers remained, the sound of armor and swords clashing filled the beach. Two more Soldiers were slain, despite their valiant efforts. The Horde was slowly dwindling but thirty or so still remained. Each Soldier was coated in blood, weary and doing their best to strike back. The fetid waves from the ocean began washing over the tops of their boots as the tide began to rise.

Cat's foot slipped, causing the sword aimed for the trunk of her neck to miss and instead strike the Sergeant in the bicep. In retaliation he growled and used the pommel of his aze to strike into the Minion's head, caving the skull inward as the body slumped limply onto the ground, soon to be picked up by the ocean.

"Keep fighting! Don't give them another inch!" Bardi barked out at the group, he was growing tired and the recent cut was clearly starting to take its toll. Another Vigil fell, an axe having caught the Woman in the throat. Blood began spurting and pouring from the freshly open cut as the corrupted Human continued to hack and hack until the only thing that remained was a bloody spurting stump of the Woman's neck.

Cat was coated in the Horde's blood; it was oily, slick and terrible smell. The stuff was all across her face, getting in her eyes and in her mouth. She spat to the side, and kicked a corrupted Asurin in the forehead, sending him bowling into another two. Cat then shoved her longsword forward, impaling the three through the stomach as they were down atop one another. Another Minion pounced atop Cat, claws raking and grabbing at her armor trying to throw her off balance, but she shook him off with a violent jostle of her torso.

The sounds of another Soldier being slaughtered filled her ears. The shrieks of pain and horror as he was dismembered throbbed at the back of Cat's mind. Four...four was all that remained of the squad of Soldiers, each exhausted and panting. The Sergeant's arm was bleeding badly, and his axe slipped from his grasp. he fumbled for it; the handle was coated with his own blood, and his fingers were growing weary from the wound. He hurled the axe toward the nearest Zhaitan Minion, the curved axe-head caught the corrupted Charr in the chest, causing it to stagger and fumble forward, crushing two smaller Asura.

Loud, imposing thumps of something heavy echoed across the shoreline. A giant loomed in the distance, making its way toward the fighting. Behind it, a large rotted log being dragged likely used as it the Behemoth's weapon. Boom, Boom, Boom! Each footfall caused the earth to tremble under its tremendous weight, it's large yellow teeth, peeking out behind its lips and half the flesh along the creature's jaw had fallen off, exposing the bone hiding underneath.

The Horde was being dwindled down, nearing twenty or so in numbers before another Soldier was killed. A spear drove through her chest entirely. The weapon fully impaled through the Warrior, exiting partway out her back. She slumped over toward the middle of the small circle the squad had formed, choking, and gasping as blood spurted and gurgled from her mouth.

The Sergeant growled and glanced back at the two of his members left alive. His fingers flexed around the wooden handle of his axe, using his good hand he began chopping and slicing, severing anything the curve of his weapon could slip into. He shouldered his way into the mass fZhaitan minions, fighting tooth and nail to take as many of them as he could. The grunts of pain and shouts of effort filled Cat's ears. Cat and the Sylvari began striking at the ones too busy and distracted by the Sergeant to notice, One after another the Corrupted fell, though it still wouldn't be enough.

Bardi Battlesplitter went limp from exhaustion. The raw sound of flesh being torn and chewed on was heard by the two survivors. Her eyes went wide as she looked down at the scene, her body working to cut through any remaining Minions as if on auto-pilot. She felt as if she was watching herself do this and not physically there. One after another they fell to Catalyna's blade, by the time she was done, she was slumped down onto her knees, panting and sobbing. The Sylvari was just as distraught, broken down and crying gas well, her face buried into her hands.

Boom, boom, boom! The sound of the Giant's heavy footfalls filled the beach as the corrupted Behemoth neared the site of the battle. The massive log was hoisted above his head and he brought id won onto the ground, sending ashockwave of raw power across the sand, a cloud of dirt, plumed from the impact site. Cat looked up, meeting the Giant's gaze. The Behemoth was also morphed and taken over by Zhaitan

The Giant's long gait carried him with ease, it quickened as he neared the two, charging at them both. The Sylvari's eyes went wide and her mouth gaped as she tried to back up. Her heels met the water's edge and she unleashed an arrow, releasing it directly into the massive thing's chest. The arrow barely pricked it, and the Giant didn't appear to falter.

"Go! We can't kill it!" Cat ordered, raising her sword up to take a more defensive stance. Cat tried to slowly strafe right, in an attempt to skirt along where the waves met the sand. The Sylvari lobbed yet another arrow toward the Giant who growled and raced faster toward the pair. Boom, boom, Boom! The sounds o his footfalls signaled his advance.

The Giant was soon on them, he reached out, scooping the Sylvari into his grasp, she struggled and wiggled in an attempt to free herself, though the Giant's grip was far too strong. He shook the Sylvari violently, jostling her back and forth until the Sylvari's neck and back snapped loudly. The giant squeezed tightly crushing the poor Soldier inside her own armor. The Behemoth then hurled the body at Cat.

Cat dodged aside, diving into the sand roughly. She squirmed away from the Giant's grasping hand, she felt her muscles tensing and cramping. Her whole body was shaking as she gave a half-hearted swing of her weapon toward the giant who was already out of range. Her hair, matted and clung to her face, it was greasy with the Afflicted's blood. She kept backpedaling, trying to keep her distance through the Giant's long reach made the task impossible.

The Giant's hand coiled around Cat as she struggled and attempted to push off the attacker's fingers. She managed to yank an arm out, and then the second arm. Sword still in hand she tilted the weapon's point against the Behemoth's wrist and pushed as hard as she could. The tip of her weapon drove through the sinew, meat, and gristle of the Giants wrist and Cat began to saw. The Behemoth howled in pain and hurled Catalyna back onto the sand. She flopped limply and rolled onto her side. Her mind buzzing and her eyesight a blur.

Slowly, she picked herself back up, using the last bit of adrenaline, she charged the beast, sword raised high in the last ditch effort to try and take down the hulking monstrosity. She leapt, both hands wrapped around the handle of her sword as she drove it right into the Giant's abdomen. The Behemoth merely staggered and pinched Cat at he stomach and tore her from her weapon, casting her aside again. She flopped uselessly to the ground, panting and coughing up sand and muck.

The loud whirring sound of a Copter hummed through the air before it hovered just offshore. Its weapons whizzed and soon began to riddle the beast with bullets. The rounds decimated the massive rotting corpse until its torso turned into a pile of mush upon the beach. The Copter's pilot swept closer, hovering near the fallen Vigil soldiers and an Asuran pilot hopped out. The Pilot scuttled over toward the only survivor Catalyna, who found herself sobbing and whimpering on the sand.
