Thoughts On Some Atypical Profession/Race Combinations

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on the site, hoping some more experienced roleplayers could perhaps share their thoughts with me on some character concepts I've come up with. Also hoping this post abides by all forum rules. Fingers crossed.

I'm a casual player, some dungeons, no fractals or raids, no PvP or WvW. Hopefully will get more into that once I'm done with grad school in April. I like to do some "light" roleplay, choosing a Profession/Race and exploring the world through their unique lense. My goal is to level cap every Elite Spec. Already have the HoT and PoF Elites done and done, these would be prepping for the Gen III elite specs, whenever those come out.

Charr Elementalist:
- A Flame Legion Shaman, essentially. I like the idea of an Iron Legion Elementalist supercharging Fire with Air, to increase the temperature of the flame, melting down Earth and other ores, and quenching the resulting metals with Water. A one-man steel foundry.
Slyvari Necromancer:
- A charming, kinda aloof spellcaster, whose wunderlust and childlike naivete has lead her to Necromancy. She is fascinate with blood and bone and flesh, especially since he's not made of any of these substances. However, this may or may not be unsettling to others. Probably one of my more popular combos.
Norn Mesmer:
- A storyteller at heart, this Norn takes the role of the Skald to the extreme, using their illusion powers to not just tell these tales and legends, but almost replicate them, to become something akin to a Broadway performance. I think Snow Leopard would be a great Spirit Of The Wild to mix in.

Asura Thief:
- I honestly don't know. I think this is the one that really stops my flow. College of Dynamics? Maybe? Maybe like...a corporate spy? College/Krewe A contracts this dude to infiltrate and extricate whatever research College/Krewe B is working on?
Charr Ranger:
- Charr have a animal side to them, and I'd like to explore that. Returning to nature, running free, unbound and untamed. Perhaps not fully feral, but perhaps wanting to not be bound to The High Legions.
Norn Engineer:
- Certainly not the first Profession that comes to mind when one thinks Norn, but I think it could be interesting. I like the idea of a Norn blacksmith who slowly intergrated Charr tech, and became a gunsmith as a result. Plus, I think the "Charr" look to Engineer Turrets could just as easily be Norn.

Asura Revenant:
- This little lizardy dudes are born scientists and explorers. I can certainly see one of these, particularly a student of The College of Dynamics, stepping into the Mists, perhaps even Fractals, in an attempt to learn more The Eternal Alchemy. And something came back with them. Would be a hell of a boon, to get your research directly from the source.
Slyvari Warrior:
- I think the Warrior can be more than just a savage, brute-force juggernaut. I kinda like the idea of a Longbow Warrior that takes more the role of team leader or commander. A bit more finessed, a bit more nuanced.

Thank you for your time everyone, any questions/comments/concerns/kudos are appreciated. Good hunting.

Regarding the Norn Engineer, we've seen several times Norn being members of pirate crews and even members of the Aetherblades (sky pirates), both using either guns or rifles. You should always keep in mind that individual characters are not bound to their 'racial fantasy' and can strand away from it, to a reasonable amount.
A Norn buccaneer or ex-Aetherblade could easily be an Engineer, using dual pistols or even cannons (considering the size/strength of Norn) as weapons, while on the later option using gizmos he/she invented/wielded. Of course, a Norn could easily be inspired by Charr engineering and try to recreate their weapons, but I dunno exactly how easy that would be unless he was tutored by an Iron Legion engineer himself.

As for the Asura Thief, it could be an Inquest Infiltrator, using whatever concealing tech he/she's given by the Inquest to sneak inside labs of other krewes and steal their plans/tools/resources or take out krewe leaders/sabotage their creations, etc.

The rest are all pretty much plausible. The only thing that I'm kinda skeptical about would be 'feral Charr'. While indeed the Charr are more 'beastial' than your average race in form, they're honestly far from beasts. Even during the Golden Legion under the reign of the Shamans when the race as a whole was much more tribal and primitive, they were still speaking, walking on two legs, holding weapons and using magic. Of course, it doesn't mean that it would break the lore in the slightest, but.. it's just not a really good choice ICly? If he'd want to stray away from the Legions, there's always the option of becoming a Gladium. Sure, he'd be pretty much the bottom of the barrel in the eyes of the Legions and the Charr belonging to such warbands, but he'd at least be able to indeed be free to work independently. He'd be completely alone in his life, ready to take whatever path he'd desire without kinda.. degenerating (even though it's too strong of a word) into something much lower than what he is.

Obviously, as I mentioned earlier, none of these ideas would be considered 'wrong' lorewise, they're all pretty much alright when it comes to abiding the universe. I just wanted to give a few little comments about those specific concepts.

Thanks for the response, much obliged. Always nice to get some more experienced feedback. I know that racial fantasy is only a general idea that can certainly be deviated from, though I do like to be somewhat aligned with it.

As for your comments on my feral Charr idea, I can see your point. I probably misspoke. Maybe not feral, but just more tuned into the natural pulse of Tyria herself. I love the idea of going Gladium, no idea why that didn't occur to me earlier. Just a Charr and his Devourer, making a home and living off the land in the Shiverpeaks. Of course, that's just me. I love the Shiverpeaks, beautiful place.

Thanks again for the help. Take care.

Also, on this one, norn mesmer would likely follow Raven, given it being the Spirit of Trickery (Amongst other things).

I was debating between Raven or Snow Leopard. I have a Norn Necromancer blessed by Raven due to it's association to death, the underworld, and escorting spirits after death. Snow Leopard is associated with strategy and laughter, and those two traits struck me as very Mesmer, though I could flip a coin on this and be happy in either case.

Thank you for the feedback.

An Iron legion ele, helping with forges or on the battlefield would be completely accepted, Maybe not popular, but accepted. A flame legion shaman would be harder I think, as they are universally disliked by other legions/races :o.

Actually a fairly popular option, even in the lore. Sylvari curiosity + wanting to learn + necromancy has previously led to fun encounters, even in the book "ghosts of ascalon" Where one openly (and innocently) asks a companion if she can use him as a minion when he dies. So in general, a solid option :).

I think this one works fairly well, especially if he wanders about the world every so often to bring the legends of the Norn to other races :d. As for Spirit, There are more ones then the four we can pick, so don't be afraid to poke your head around the wiki and see if another Spirit has traits you like.

Sounds inquesty, but another thing I'd like to bring up for you to consider. Just because the class name is "Thief" Does not mean you actually have to play a thief. For example, I have two "thief" class chars, one is a ship captain/head of house, another is a shining blade sniper.

Charr Ranger:

Could be a charr who wasn't raised in the high legions (they exist). Hell, with the Olmakhan that origin would fit such a character rather well, as a ranger in heavy sync with the flow of nature around him.

It's not so odd really, early on in Gw2 it was described as Charr, Norn, and Humans mainly used three different types of guns. Plus you could have a thing about making the hardest hitting rifle around :p. As noted, there have been engineer type norn in various pirate groups (there was one carrying a cannon on his shoulder as his primary weapon with the aetherblades).

Only comment I'd have is remember the echos a revenant talks to/calls upon are legendary figures :).

Warriors have never been limited to juggernauts of brute force, and like the thief can cover a range of roles. The roles you listed are perfectly fine,

Just my thoughts on them, overall they all sound fine to me!

I can only agree with the others here. All ideas seem perfectly fine to me. Your norn could use a better fitting spirit like, yes, Raven or maybe Owl. Although I don't believe it is necessary for him to have a spirit that fits his profession. Since you revere a spirit for its associated attributes, he could also be following Snow Leopard, Bear or even Dragon (if you dare). As a person, he could just WISH he was like that, or try to be like that, reflecting in his choice of legends for example, that he tells people, favoring those, in which these spirits take a role or where the hero is associated with them.

Other than that, you should keep in mind that if you (seriously or heavily) roleplay in Tyria, you take a step back from the game GW2, and emerge yourself in the universe of it. Your choice of character class or abilities must not have anything to do with what your character actually does roleplay wise. It is just advisable to choose one, that let's you better represent these things in the game visually.

And welcome to our imaginary madhouse :) Enjoy your stay

^ This so much. I've seen people who were panicking and fretting because "Wait, I'm a guardian but I said I was blessed by grenth in char creation!" and I had to explain that those options don't really have to apply to your RP at all. Hell almost all of my characters outright ignore or are unrelated to those elements lol.

Skills can be tweaked in RP (My minion master rarely uses the ingame minion models), or you can do stuff that you can't ingame. Like have an engineer sniper (engineer rifle skills are all more like shotguns).

None of those sound atypical to me at all, to be honest.
