our server has a very valuable asset available to us that most of the other servers don't. roleplaying and roleplayers. if handled properly, it can be an extremely potent tool for our overall efforts. for example, say a group of 5 are rping in one of our towers. awesome. that's a set group of defenders for that place that have a way to keep busy even during the quiet times. then attackers come, the rping group gives a shout of the situation through the /team channel, and can start fending them off while waiting for reinforcements to arrive. epic battles ensue, and great fun is had by all. and those defenders now have a new topic to include into their rp. everyone is happy. our guild has done this a few times, and it's been a lot of fun.
last week, however, i saw behavior that could potentially put a black eye on reputation of the rp community here. the situation was that we had two towers left on the map. the attacking forces were there in great numbers. we needed all available bodies helping out. i was killed in the tower i was defending. i respawned in the citadel. i immediately caught a few emotes in the chat box. nearby, a group was roleplaying. i ran past them the first time, thinking that perhaps they were just getting everything in order before heading over to help out. a little bit later in the defense of that same tower, i get killed again, and find out that they're still there. so i ICly asked them to help out, and run back to the tower to defend it. a little while later, i get killed again and find out they still in the exact same positions having the exact same conversation. that tower was lost, and as i was heading over to help defend the other tower, i see that group get up and walk to the portal. essentially, everything they did there, they could have done anywhere else without taking up a spot in the queue for those who would be willing to help.
as the unofficial RP server, our players should feel encouraged to roleplay as much as possible. however, they should also understand the situation they are in. WvW is a war zone. you're going to be needed to help, and you don't need to break character to do so. there are many many people in there who are doing this already, and it's awesome. they're in character, and they're helping the cause. however, the situation i described in the paragraph above only serves to perpetuate the myth that rp'ers aren't good at PvP. a myth that many of us are giving our all to disprove, and are making quite a bit of headway in that regard.
also, to the roleplayers who help with the war effort, thank you. it makes the overall experience far more enjoyable. to the few who aren't, give it a try. you just might find that it's very fun and exciting.
