Roleplaying in WvW

our server has a very valuable asset available to us that most of the other servers don't. roleplaying and roleplayers. if handled properly, it can be an extremely potent tool for our overall efforts. for example, say a group of 5 are rping in one of our towers. awesome. that's a set group of defenders for that place that have a way to keep busy even during the quiet times. then attackers come, the rping group gives a shout of the situation through the /team channel, and can start fending them off while waiting for reinforcements to arrive. epic battles ensue, and great fun is had by all. and those defenders now have a new topic to include into their rp. everyone is happy. our guild has done this a few times, and it's been a lot of fun.

last week, however, i saw behavior that could potentially put a black eye on reputation of the rp community here. the situation was that we had two towers left on the map. the attacking forces were there in great numbers. we needed all available bodies helping out. i was killed in the tower i was defending. i respawned in the citadel. i immediately caught a few emotes in the chat box. nearby, a group was roleplaying. i ran past them the first time, thinking that perhaps they were just getting everything in order before heading over to help out. a little bit later in the defense of that same tower, i get killed again, and find out that they're still there. so i ICly asked them to help out, and run back to the tower to defend it. a little while later, i get killed again and find out they still in the exact same positions having the exact same conversation. that tower was lost, and as i was heading over to help defend the other tower, i see that group get up and walk to the portal. essentially, everything they did there, they could have done anywhere else without taking up a spot in the queue for those who would be willing to help.

as the unofficial RP server, our players should feel encouraged to roleplay as much as possible. however, they should also understand the situation they are in. WvW is a war zone. you're going to be needed to help, and you don't need to break character to do so. there are many many people in there who are doing this already, and it's awesome. they're in character, and they're helping the cause. however, the situation i described in the paragraph above only serves to perpetuate the myth that rp'ers aren't good at PvP. a myth that many of us are giving our all to disprove, and are making quite a bit of headway in that regard.

also, to the roleplayers who help with the war effort, thank you. it makes the overall experience far more enjoyable. to the few who aren't, give it a try. you just might find that it's very fun and exciting.

That's what I'm saying! =D Would love to see more Roleplaying in WvW!

I personally want our guild to have WvW RPers. I think both activities are very fun to do, and I find myself performing short acts during WvW.

If anyone would like to do this, PM me or send an in game mail (ArtPulse.8630), and we can make a small group, see how it goes! =)

Cheers!

There have been a lot of times where I find myself on Sentry duty in World Vs. World wishing that it was a little less boring. All I do is run around and tick siege and keep a look out for enemies.

It's really not fun. Critical, but extremely dull.

I wish there was someone around to roleplay with while doing things like this. I'm not the greatest at WvW, but it's something I am looking to excel in more.

However, I do have a minor concern about roleplaying/emoting in /say chat. Only because it seems to be a little awkward to be sprouting out roleplay when there are serious orders being given out by commanders and groups. As much as I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to roleplay within WvW, I'd like to be courteous enough as to not be disruptive to our non-roleplayers, and WvW leaders.

I believe that roleplay within this setting is possible with a mixture of courtesy, and not idling by when something is going down. Not everything has to be emoted. This is why RP in an MMO is so great. You can see the action, so you needn't type it all out. When Roleplayers start typing and stop helping, that is when our fellow non-Rper's are going to get angry with us. Otherwise, there's no reason why it can't be done.

BUT, if you see me out in WvW on Senzafeen (she's peach and white in leafy armor - can't really miss her), feel free to indulge me in roleplay. Sometimes I go out there on my alt Kiavwen, too. There is so much great potential for character growth and development in World vs. World.

Just add me! (Dreamwaker.4095).

I've always been kind of a pvp nut, but I don't see a thing wrong with some idle RP here and there in WvW in those dull times. :| Sounds like fun, honestly. I agree with you completely. I get into my characters so much that I'd be lying if I said I didn't always imagine their reactions in pvp. /neeeerd

I'm adding you! =)

Yea, we would have literally the best sentries ever.

I don't think it'd be an issue. Roleplayers could use the /me to talk like they are used to, and just avoid /say altogether. Non-RPers can simply turn emotes on chat off if that's a problem for them. And done! =D

You know, I've never done WvW.

It's something I'd want to get into at some point or another, especially having lead RP-PVP guilds successfully in other games.
Hopefully there's some roleplay on the field when I decide to take the plunge. That'd make me happy.

Well, my stance on this is the same as it has always been (and it isn't gospel):

So, you're in WvW...

Are you escorting dolyaks? Wonderful. You're doing something that contributes to the effort, but that often has enough downtime to allow you to RP. Feel free to do so. However be absolutely certain that your RP isn't causing you to slack on your duties. Be mindful of your surroundings, and don't let the enemy get too close, unnoticed, because you were typing out an emote.

Are you guarding a tower? Well, alright. You're arguably doing something that is helping out your server. Probably. To be honest, having a bunch of people in a tower is a bit 50/50 on usefulness. If that tower is pretty deep into territory you control, you really don't need a whole group in there. One person scouting is probably fine. If that tower is on the front lines, though, then you're going to be contributing a lot by having several people there in the event the enemy show up to knock on the door. Totally feel free to RP it up, but like above, be certain that you aren't slacking on your duties and that you're actively keeping an eye out at all times for enemy movement. Be sure you're calling it out, too.

Are you in a siege that is attacking something? Okay, that's more tricky. If you're safe and you're just PvDooring because there's no enemies to flush out, you can probably RP a bit during that time. If its an intense battle... yeah, be focused on that.

As long as you're contributing to the server's effort, and roleplaying isn't going to hinder that, then by all means. If you aren't contributing and/or roleplaying is hinder what you're doing though, then please don't. That isn't just because it harms how well our server is performing, but it also gives roleplayers a really, really, really bad name. We need good PR with our fellow gamers who aren't roleplayers, not hugely negative things.

Well yea, we have to remember it's WvW. Limited seats.

You know, I think you can RP by doing Improv. Use your entire environment instead of playing out your story. That way your RP relies on what is going on with the map. So anything that isn't helping the borderlands, it's against your role playing as well. That way they go by the hand! =)
