WvW Premier Season (achievements, oh my!)

The term "Fair Weather", albeit true, is not conducive to a unified server.

Some of these Match-ups look rather rough, and I don't see us coming out on top other than weeks 1 and 7.
Fortunately, getting the achievements for the Meta shouldn't be impossible, even when facing the Big 3.
While I'm not a hardcore WvW'er (Mist Warrior?), as I tend to use the trains and good match-ups to level my alts, I may be rolling out on my WvW Main, Anundr, to bring glory to the Coast while earning my Meta.

Things are going to be rough for a while, at least until we get more servers that are on-par with us, rather than every server being either: Easily wrecked, or can easily wreck us. Just stay strong, stay positive, and stay classy.

I agree - I hope the regular WvWers will see this as an opportunity to welcome and introduce folks that don't normally come to WvW to tactics and teamwork, instead of getting unhappy that the scrubs are in their way and making the queue long. They're going to come anyway because the lure of the achievements is strong, so make the best of it!

I'm interested in participating in WvW now that I have a few characters to choose from, but I'll need some individual guidance - the guides aren't much help, really. So if anyone has the patience for a one on one conversation via PMs, hit me up :)

I play mostly noon-7pm Eastern, or 9-4 Pacific/server time. If you're frequently on during those hours, and like any of my characters, please friend me and bother me!

There are several commanders willing to lead the militia in WvW, including several members of The Tarnished Coastguard and FLUX Capacity. Nevertheless, even these commanders willing to lead and instruct the more casual WvWers can get frustrated when their followers scatter and flee and otherwise not listen to their commands.

Folks new or inexperienced with WvW should seek out Manatakuta (TTC), Kendrick Duskomen (TTC), Ryvalia (FLUX), Stillgar (FLUX) and other well-known and militia-friendly commanders.

As for achievements, be prepared against JQ and BG next week as the majority of their players are exceptionally skilled and may make achievement hunting considerably more difficult.

I wish no one in wvw felt labels were necessary as honestly at certain hours we need all the people we can get and calling them names or categorizing them does not help. Which leads me into the care and feeding of queues in wvw and how to avoid them:

- If you get a queue, refresh it every 20 minutes or so, don't suffer in silence for hours waiting for it to pop

- consider helping on a different wvw map. If you have a hankering for wvw, see if you can get into another map than the one you wanted and once on there, queue while you play. Typically, when one map is overqueued, another map could use your help. If you end up on a map with no big TC presence, kill enemy dolyaks, sentries, get swords on enemy keeps (basically drawing attention from that queued map you want)

- Play at different hours. After about 8pm server time until about 1pm server time on weekdays the servers become unqueued or much lower queue but there is still a lot of action. All of the servers in this league have similar or bigger forces on in late night/ early morning server hours. Some of the best play I've had in GW2 has been at 2am server time defending keeps with a crew of 4 vs 20 enemies - it's truly epic!

I agree with this! I have way more fun from 6am-noon server time than I do at any other time of the day, to the point that I am almost never in WvW in the late afternoon or evening. Usually short to no queue! And far less judgypants WvW elitist attitudes at that time of day too, seems like people are more appreciative of every person that walks through the gate.

As others have stated, get to know your commanders well and follow them and be sure to listen to their instructions. It is absolutely helpful to hop on the TC mumble, as often commanders are muted from chat because they are giving out too many instructions that the game considers it "spam" so often they just stick to telling orders in mumble. It's a stupid system, blame Anet, but if you see people telling everyone to hop onto mumble in team chat it's for the best :)

Yeah not to preach too much on Mumble but Mumble is awesome. It isn't just for wvw either, it's a great tool for organizing your guild, for getting together with other folks to do world bosses and living story content. It's also a doddle to set up, is free and does not appear to conflict with GW2 at all if your machine is a little underpowered at this point in its existence :) Also it has text to talk functionality, link in channel, layered channels so you can talk to more than one room if you need to do that as a guild leader or commander etc.

I do want to emphasize that while getting on voice comms is indeed useful, it is not necessary, and those who are hearing-impaired or socially anxious and therefore would not really personally benefit from it should not feel pressured to get on Mumble or else feel like some horrible WvW slacker. Voice communication helps but so does staying aware of your surroundings and learning to take visual cues from what you're seeing the commanders do.

LONG ASS REPLY DOWN BELOW

I think the main misconception about us asking people to get on Mumble is that we want them to talk. Not at all. If you don't have a mic, that's totally fine. The only thing commanders expect of you when you get on Mumble is to listen. But different strokes, different folks (though I do know that there are commanders who will probably find this annoying, but oh well).

Other commanders that I know of who are willing to lead militia:
Blue Spitfyre (or some such, I do know that there is a Spitfire in his name but with a strange spelling)
Chudzover (from EP, usually is online during early NA/EU primetime)
Garban Yahoo (also from EP, usually on during SEA/OCE)
Traxien Cion/Traxien Kills (HE FORCED ME TO ADD HIS NAME TO THIS LIST omg ;_;. But yeah, really bad good militia commander. Very easy to bully. :d) [STUN]
Commander Jadon (aka Commander Commander Jadon. VERY good militia commander. Please ask to nerf him though) [NOPE]
Of Disco (also known as Paulus. Very good commander, especially at holding down our own BL) [CERN]
Banelene (mainly on during NA prime) [STUN]
Major Horatio/Admiral Beau [STUN]
M Zen Master L B
Acerox [INVC]
Hugable [INVC]
Kin Bear [WL]

I've said this before. Unless the top three servers implode in a spectacular fashion, we will be placed fourth as normal. Prior to entering the Leagues we thought that Blackgate is weaker than before and there's a possibility that we may overthrow them in third place. But given the scores at the moment, that doesn't seem to be the case.

We always welcome new blood. Even before the Leagues started we've been wanting to get people interested in WvW. While there are some people who are new to the game mode and are genuinely willing to learn, there are people there that simply do not care and are only there for their achievement (they are referred to as 'glory hunters' or something). This is what frustrates dedicated WvWers the most. It's annoying (and slightly infuriating) to watch TCBL go red and blue and we cannot go over to help because the map is queued.

A good example of this was on Saturday night server time, when we lost EVERYTHING on TCBL but our garrison. Maguuma was in the Lord's Room. Naturally the commander asked for reinforcements from other maps. There was a response but lo and behold, queue. The commander only had 30-40 people on him. A borderlands map can hold up to around 90 players per server. My guild was furious. But then again, some of us are wholly protective of our borderlands. Most of us will stay there to escort yaks to make sure that our keeps are upgraded, supplied and with a functioning waypoint.

As for terminology (like being called militia or PUG), please don't think of it as a negative thing. In fact, Tarnished Coast prides itself of its strong militia. It simply means that you aren't running with an organised guild group. While some people think of this with a negative connotation, they are few and far between.

However, you WILL encounter people grumbling about fairweathers mostly, and that's fine (what I mean by grumbling is not calling you all sorts of names btw). More often than not, those are the people who are always around regardless of the score. Even I will grumble about fairweathers. Normally my thought process is as follows: "What EBG is queued during SEA? Where were you when JQ was knocking on our garrison gate?" But I won't berate people publicly for joining only when matches are easy.

The case of what we call Fairweather Syndrome is true, and has been around even before the leagues started. It's the main reason why there is a huge population disparity between T1 matches and T2+ matches.

Things will die down in the next coming weeks, and by then people will realise who joined simply for the achievements, and who joined with genuine interest in WvW. And I thank the people who are always there to help, you are a great asset to our server. :d

And here is a rundown of the servers we're against because YAY BOREDOM:
